Mpraeso, Feb. 19, GNA - Over 150 peasant farmers, chiefs, assembly members and unit committee members from three electoral areas in Kwahu South District on Tuesday went on a two-hour peaceful demonstration at Mpraeso against the destructive and inhuman activities of Fulani herdsmen at Mpraeso.

The farmers, mobilized from 15 communities in Adawso, Oworobong and Ankomah electoral areas with red bands around their heads and arms assembled at Mpraeso and marched through the principal streets singing war songs and later presented a petition to Nana Onwona Asante, Kwahu South District Chief Executive.

In the petition, the farmers gave the government a two-week ultimatum to evacuate the over 200,000 cattle from the area to enable them undertake their farming activities in the area in a peaceful atmosphere.

Speaking to the media after the demonstration, Nana Agyare Brako, Chief of Ohenmaa, said the herdsmen had killed five farmers at Ohenmaa, Nyadie, Amartey and John Hott while over 100 hectares of foodstuffs, vegetables and trees planted under the Forest Plantation Development Programme were also burnt down by the herdsmen over the past month. He therefore, appealed to government as a matter of urgency to take steps to drive away the herdsmen and their large numbers of cattle from the area to enable farmers in the various communities undertake their farming activities in peace and development.

Receiving the petition, Nana Asante assured them that it would be sent to the appropriate quarters for the necessary action and advised them to exercise patience and avoid taking the law into their own hands. He advised the farmers to unite and form groups to protect themselves from further attacks in the hands of the herdsmen.
