Shama District Assembly inaugurated

Shama (W/R), Feb.29- GNA- Mrs. Angelina Baiden-Amissah, Member of Parlaiment (MP) for Shama and Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Sports, on Friday inaugurated the the 20-member Shama District Assembly at Shama.

She read President J.A Kufuor's address which urged the leadership of the Assembly to endeavour to live in peace with other representatives of the people, including MPs and traditional authorities. The President stated; "Accord them the necessary respect and assistance as they will require" adding, "After all, they all have a common goal with you, which is the development and the well-being of the people".

He urged the assembly to come out with innovative ways of generating revenue and improving revenue collection and to be creative and innovative in its environmental health and sanitation management. Mr Joseph Anokwafo Arthur, who was the only candidate, was elected unopposed as the Presiding Member of the Assembly in an election supervised by the Electoral Commission. In his acceptance speech, he promised to live up to expectation and lead the assembly to harness the human and material resources to develop the area.

The District Chief Executive has not been appointed. Earlier, Mr Philip Kwesi Nkrumah, Shama-Ahanta East Metropolitan Chief Executive, had dissolved the Shama Sub-Metropolitan Council in accordance with the Local Government Act at a short ceremony. He urged members of the Shama District Assembly to place their expertise at the disposal of the assembly to ensure good land administration in the area. Mr Nkrumah said the SAEMA would revert to its former name of Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly now that Shama District Assembly has been established.
