Kumasi, Sept. 17, GNA - The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETfund) on Wednesday handed over a 606,794.33 Ghana-cedi students accommodation facility to the College of Technology Education, University of Education Winneba, Kumasi campus. The four-floor structure, which is an extension of the existing Opoku Ware II Hall of the university, has 60 cubicles, 32 water closets, 32 urinals and 32 bathrooms and will accommodate 240 students. It was started in February 2006 and completed in August.

Speaking at the ceremony Mr Harry Owusu, a member of the GETfund board, said the fund was sponsoring 10 projects on the university campus at a cost of about 2,200,000 Ghana cedis. He mentioned some of the projects as the rehabilitation of the library, existing halls, access roads, the auditorium as well as the construction of staff bungalows, faculty buildings and the provision of computers and other equipment for the university.

Mr Owusu said the ability of the board to expand accommodation on campus would depend on the willingness of students to pay acceptable user fees and maintain the facilities. Professor Steve Sobotie, Principal of UEW-K, advised the students to always seek information on problems confronting them from the university authorities instead of rushing to the media. He said resort to the media often embarrassed management and dampened their spirit to take initiatives that would benefit students on campus. Professor Sobotie said 300 Ghana cedis per student per year being charged for the new accommodation facility was reached after extensive assessment and consultations with all stakeholders and advised the students to cooperate with the authorities to help improve the accommodation situation and other facilities on campus.
