Whindo (W/R), Sept.18, GNA - The Chief and elders of Whindo near Takoradi have launched a public education programme to forge unity among the people and to refrain from acts and utterances that could spark violence in the run-up to the December General Elections. Nana Kwesi Essiem IV, Chief of Whindo said Communities in the area were deprived in terms of good roads, potable water, sanitation and schools and therefore any acts of violence would compound the problems hence the programme. Briefing the Ghana News Agency at Whindo on Thursday, Nana Essiem said the programme would strictly be centred on peaceful co-existence and planning of developmental programmes for the various communities. He said it would also centre on the provisions of the constitution that banned chiefs from dabbling in active politics. Peace messages would be delivered at public forums, markets, churches and mosques in about 15 communities including Assakae, Whindo, Mampong, Pretea, Bomba, Akromakrom, Tumantu, and Komfoeku. Nana Essiem emphasised that citizens, despite their political affiliation must ensure that peace prevailed adding, "Ghana is the only country that we have and we should not commit acts that would eventually polarise the people to destroy the good image of our country because of our political differences". He urged women to impress upon their husbands, fathers, brothers and sons not to allow themselves to be used negatively by selfish politicians to serve their parochial interests. Nana Essiem appealed to the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly to rehabilitate the 10-kilometre Kwesimintsim-Assakae-Whindo road to facilitate easy movement of goods and services. He called for the construction of a modern bridge to replace the old wooden one that span river Whin which had become a death trap.
