Gomoa Enyeme (C/R), Nov. 11, GNA - The chiefs and people of Gomoa Enyeme in the Gomoa West District of the Central Region has raised an amount of GH¢1,500 in aid of a library complex. The project, which would cost GH¢50,000 would be financed through levies, fund raising harvests and personal contributions by the citizens of the town and NGOs. Addressing the Annual Akwambo Festival, Nana Mbil-Frempong III, Chief of Enyeme said the construction of the library would help find solutions to the poor Basic Certificate Education Examination (BECE) results, recorded by the Junior High School in the town. He said the chiefs and elders had promulgated bye-laws, which ban school children idling outside after 2000 hours, adding that, "this would enable them to stick to their books". Nana Mbil-Frempong said school children had also been banned from video centres and other entertainments programmes that could jeopardise the studies.
The chiefs and elders had also instituted an award scheme, to honour school children in the town, to encourage them to study and attain higher academic laurels. Nana Mbil-Frempong said the protracted chieftaincy dispute in the town has finally been settled by the Cape Coast High Court, and that it was time to foster unity to promote peace and development. John Kojo Sey, Chairman of the Akwambo Planning Committee, told the activities are held. Mr Sey expressed his concern about the absenteeism of some teachers and appealed to the Parent Teacher Association(PTA) and School management Committees (SMC) to monitor the attendances of teachers to ensure effective teaching and learning. He said Plan Ghana, an NGO,, has instituted scholarship for students who would excel in the BECE exams and urged parents to encourage their children to study hard to benefit from the scheme.
Eleven officers and 165 men drawn from four security services were on parade in Ho on Tuesday to mark the 63rd Remembrance Day in the Volta Region. They were the military from 66 Artillery Regiment, Police, Fire Service and Prisons Service. Also on parade under the command of Captain Elvis Asamoah, were 17 veterans. A combined military and police band provided the marching tunes. Captain George Nfodjoh (rtd), representing Veterans Association of Ghana (VAG) read the Binyon Verses. Wreaths were laid on behalf of the President and People of Ghana by Mr Kofi Dzamesi, Volta Regional Minister, Ghana Armed Forces and other security services by Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Kotia, Commanding Officer of 66th Artillery Regiment, Togbe Kwaku Ayim IV, Paramount Chief of Ziavi Traditional Area on behalf of Chiefs and People. A wreath was laid on behalf of VAG, while a minute silence was observed in remembrance and honour of those who died during World War One and Two. 11 Nov. 08
