Accra, Jan. 9, GNA - Nii Nortey Dua, Member of Parliament for Ledzokuku Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, has promised to work urgently on the water problem to bring relief to the constituents. "I believe when we pick the bits and pieces about the water problem, people will see the solution coming for the water problem," Nii Dua said in an interview with Ghana News Agency (GNA) after attending a sitting of Parliament in Accra.

The newly sworn legislator, who represents the residents of Teshie and its environs, said the inadequate water supply was still the number one problem in the Ledzokuku Constituency.

"The seriousness of the water problem would be much more appreciated if there were a fire outbreak. As of now there is no immediate source of water for fire tenders in case there is a fire outbreak. A tender has to go to as far as Accra before it can get water, by which time everything might have been gutted. Nii Dua said people had also been forced to drink untreated water from the Naaplar Stream for lack of water, which he said was responsible for some water borne diseases in areas close by the stream. He promised to investigate the problem and team up with individuals, groups and the Ghana Water Company to address the situation, adding that he had already began consultations with officials of the Ghana Water Company on on-going water projects and abandoned ones in the Constituency.

Nii Dua promised to work within the broad programme of the Atta Mills Government of building a water station at Akuse to boost the supply of water in the eastern parts of Accra. The Ledzokuku MP, a professional broadcaster and Journalism Lecturer, who once served as the Presiding Member of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, also spoke on the need to improve the strength of bridges and construct new ones to make roads more accessible. This he said would ease the traffic situation along the main Teshie-La Beach Road. Nii Dua said he would practice an inclusive leadership, and invite candidates that contested the Ledzokuku parliamentary seat to join hands with him to uplift the constituency. 9 Jan. 09
