Lawra, May 9, GNA - Mr. Samson Abu, Lawra District Chief Executive (DCE), said that the Assembly was collaborating with traditional leaders to prevent the sale and consumption of food and alcoholic drinks at funerals. He said the Assembly would also educate the public on the dangers of using chemicals for fishing.

The DCE who was speaking at the first ordinary session of the assembly at Lawra, said farmers would be educated on the need to refrain from farming along river banks and sources of rivers to protect water bodies for agricultural production.

He said the Assembly would educate the youth on the consequences of premarital sex among the youth to prevent teenage pregnancy, unsafe abortion and sexually transmitted diseases in the area. Mr. Abu announced that the Assembly would ensure that libraries were built and old ones rehabilitated to promote education in the area. He said that the Assembly would liaise with the Ghana Highways Authority to ensure that road and bridge contractors build structures to conserve water for agricultural production during the dry season. Mr. Abu said the Assembly was considering establishing a kraal for cattle in transit for revenue generation and reduction in the incidence of cattle rustling in the district. The DCE said that henceforth all stray animals that would be caught in the Lawra Township would be confined. He said that the Assembly was working to build Community Based Health Planning and Service (CHPS) compounds and schools for communities which had always been cut off from the area during the raining seasons. 9 May 10
