Navrongo (UE), June 21, GNA - The Upper East Deputy Regional Ministe r, Mrs. Lucy Awuni, at the weekend stated that government was committed to providing infrastructure facilities for senior high schools and technical institutions. She said funds had been allocated in this year's budget for the construction of classrooms to absorb new entrants into senior high and technical schools through out the country. Mrs. Awuni said this known during the 6th speech and prize giving da y of Awe Senior High School at Navrongo in the Kassena Nankana East Distric t of the Upper East Region, which was on the theme, Current Educational Reforms, Prospects for Senior High Schools and Technical Schools. Mrs. Awuni noted that education held a unique place in every society and had therefore become an indispensable means for effective participati on in the economies of the 21st century that have been affected by rapid glo bal changes. The Minister said government would continue with the rehabilitation works on science resource centres, furnish them with the requisite equipm ent and tools, and relentlessly pursue programmes such as science, technology and mathematics education clinics, to increase students' interest in the study of science. She called on students in the country to help government mount a vigorous and persistent campaign against the forces of darkness and enemi es of progress and development.

Mr. Paul Achana, Headmaster of the school, called on government and developmental partners to speed up measures they had taken to support the schools, such as vehicles and potable water among others that would help to improve on academic performance. Mr. Achana noted that aside the numerous challenges the school face, there had been progressive improvement in the West Africa Senior High Sch ool Certificate (WASSCE) Examination results over the years. He said the school presented 58 candidates for the examination and scored 98 percent. The pro-vice chancellor for the University for Development Studies (UDS), Professor David Miller, identified education as the only tool whic h could be used for the attainment of self independence. Professor Miller noted that the sharing of the national cake since t he advent of Ghana as a nation state had always been skewed.
