AMA to re-allocate sheds to traders

Accra, July 1, GNA - The Accra Metropolitan Assembly(AMA) has warned traders allocated sheds at the Pedestrian Shopping Mall at Odawna to utilise them, else they would be re-allocated to others.

Mr Desmond Nii Addo Biney, Presiding Member of AMA who gave the warning, said they had been given up to Friday, July 9. Speaking to journalists after a tour of the mall in Accra on Wednesday, Mr Biney said the assembly was losing revenue since the traders had refused to utilise the sheds to generate revenue.

He said on several occasions the assembly had appealed to them to utilise the mall but to no avail and that after the deadline, a committee set up by the assembly would supervise the re-allocation. Mr Biney expressed concern about the situation whereby the mall had been turned into sleeping place for some people and other social vices. Mr Albert Amenku, Chairman of the Re-allocation Committee, said due to the empty spaces at the mall some people had turned the place into a refuse dump.

He announced that all unoccupied sheds would be advertised in the mass media for applications from interested traders. "I don't know why traders who paid monies for the sheds have refused to occupy them," he added.

Mr Amenku pointed out that less than 10 per cent of the traders had occupied the sheds, while the assembly was yet to fix the new rates for the sheds. The mall can accommodate about 6,000 traders. 01 July 10
