Saltpond, July 12, GNA - The Mfantseman Municipal Assembly has prepared a four-year
development plan under which 76 basic schools and 50 road networks are to be either constructed
or rehabilitated. The plan, to be implemented from 2010 to 2013, also caters for 25 sanitation facilities, mainly
toilets and refuses containers. Mr. Paul Mac Ofori, Municipal Planning Officer, said this at the assembly's sitting to discuss the
plan at Saltpond on Friday. Mr. Ofori said 21 sources of potable water supply system and 31 electrification projects would
be undertaken during the period. Twelve drainage systems, sea defence walls and bridges are to be built to protect some
communities from erosion. Seven markets are to be improved to enhance revenue generation and eight projects, including
small-scale irrigation, forestation and setting up of hybrid nurseries and landing beaches are to be
provided to boost agriculture. Six community centres and three football fields are to be provided as recreation facilities for
the people. Four police stations, three town and area council offices and two lorry parks are to be
constructed and rehabilitated within the period. Mr. Ofori said some tourist attractions including the hanging rock at Obuadze, the crocodile
pond at Ekumfi Ebuakwa and Owu Maam a deep valley at Kormantse where the Fantis defeated
the Ashantis in a war would be developed. Mr. Henry Kweku Hayfrom, Municipal Chief Executive, said the plan, a directive from the
Central Regional Coordinating Directorate, was to facilitate President John Atta Mills' better
Ghana agenda. He appealed to people of the municipality to submit inputs into the plan before the final
preparation is sent to the Regional Coordinating Directorate for approval. Mr. George Kuntu Blankson, MP for Mfantseman East, appealed to the assembly to step up
revenue generation to support the plan as the proposals in it could not be implemented without
money. Mr. Aquinas Tawiah Quansah, Member of Parliament for Mfantseman West, deplored the poor
communal spirit of the people and appealed to chiefs and assembly members to rekindle the spirit
to facilitate the execution of the plan. Mr. Kojo Aikins, the Presiding Member, expressed gratitude to the planning officer and his
team for a good work done.
