The delegation, together with the MP, paid a courtesy call on the Kpembewura
The Member of Parliament for Salaga-South has initiated steps toward strengthening the fight against drug abuse in the Municipality following a high-level engagement with the Narcotic Control Commission (NCC) on the proposed establishment of a District Office in Salaga.
The MP on Wednesday January 7, 2026, received a delegation from the Narcotic Control Commission, led by the Savannah Regional Commander, Madam Patricia Rashida Ewuntomah, as part of preparatory activities toward setting up a district office in Salaga.
The visit followed a formal request by the MP’s office, citing the long distance between Salaga and the regional capital, as well as the growing incidence of drug abuse, particularly among the youth.
According to the MP, the absence of a district NCC presence has "constrained effective monitoring, prevention and response to narcotic-related activities in the Municipality, making the establishment of a local office a necessary and timely intervention."
As part of the visit, the delegation, together with the MP, paid a courtesy call on the Kpembewura, Banbange Ndefoso IV, at his palace in Kpembe.
The purpose of the visit was to formally inform the traditional authority of the initiative and to seek his blessings and support.
In his remarks, the Kpembewura, on behalf of his chiefs and queen mothers, expressed strong readiness to collaborate with the NCC and other stakeholders to ensure the successful establishment of the district office.
He voiced deep concern about the rising rate of drug abuse in the Municipality and its destructive impact on the future of the youth and subsequently gave his full blessing for the process to proceed.
Speaking at the palace, Ewuntomah noted that the distance between Salaga and the Savannah Regional capital has posed significant challenges to effective service delivery by the Commission, particularly in the context of limited resources.
She described the request for a district office as both timely and necessary, assuring the Kpembewura that once established, the NCC would work closely with traditional authorities, the Member of Parliament, the Municipal Assembly and other stakeholders to curb drug abuse and related activities in the area.
Following the palace visit, the team proceeded to the Business Resource Centre, where a temporary office space has been earmarked for the proposed district NCC office.
The regional team expressed satisfaction with the facility and reaffirmed their commitment to engaging their superiors to expedite the approval and establishment process.
In his remarks, the Salaga-South MP expressed profound appreciation to the Savannah Regional Commander and her team for their swift response and demonstrated commitment.
He reiterated that the Salaga Municipality has become one of the hotspots for drug abuse and illicit drug activities, a situation he described as gradually eroding the future of the youth.
He noted that the approval of his request for a district NCC office would significantly enhance efforts to sensitise young people on the dangers of drug abuse and encourage them to channel their energies into productive and meaningful ventures.
On behalf of the people of the Salaga-South Constituency, the MP extended his gratitude to the Minister of Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, for his support toward the initiative.
He also commended the Savannah Regional Narcotic Control Commission team for their cooperation and continued commitment to safeguarding the future of the youth in the Municipality.
