The Member of Parliament for Lower Manya Krobo in the Eastern Region, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, on Sunday, January 11, 2026, led the recognition of 48 distinguished indigenes of the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality for their outstanding contributions to the area’s development.
The maiden Lower Manya Krobo Excellence Awards ceremony was held at the Laasi Astroturf in Odumase-Krobo and attracted a large gatherings of national, regional and community stakeholders.
The event, jointly hosted by the lawmaker who also served as deputy interior minister, and the Municipal Chief Executive, John Atter Matey, was instituted to celebrate excellence, service and dedication across generations.
Several of the honourees were recognised posthumously for the lasting impact of their work in education, public service, security, politics and community development.
Addressing the gathering, Terlabi explained that the awards scheme was deliberately created to honour the heroes and heroines of Lower Manya Krobo whose achievements have often gone undocumented.
He stressed that beyond celebrating individual success, the initiative seeks to inspire the youth by demonstrating that men and women from the municipality have excelled locally and internationally through discipline, hard work and commitment to service.
“If my speech is listened to carefully, the essence of this programme is to recognise our heroes and heroines and allow the younger generation to appreciate that there are people from this very soil who have gone beyond our borders and excelled in various fields of life,” the MP stated.
He added that sharing the stories of these achievers was critical to motivating young people to emulate their values and contributions.
The ceremony was graced by several high-profile dignitaries, including Dr Mark-Oliver Kevor, Eastern Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress and Director-General of the National Information Technology Agency (NITA); the Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey; and former Member of Parliament for Lower Manya Krobo, Michael Teye Nyaunu.
Their presence underscored the regional and national significance of the initiative.
Among those honoured were pioneering educators and institution builders whose efforts laid the foundation for formal education in the municipality.
The late Konor (Paramount Chief) of the Manya Krobo Traditional Area, Oklemekukuza Azu Matey Korley was honoured for his role in the establishment of Manya Krobo Senior High School, while the late R T Madjtey, the first Inspector-General of Police from the area, was celebrated for his profound influence on policing and mentorship within the security services.
Djabanor was similarly recognised for establishing the Akro Schools, including Akro Primary and Akro Middle School.
The awards also highlighted trailblazing leadership and academic excellence.
Teyegaga was recognised as the first female Presiding Member of the Municipal Assembly, while Amui, the first woman from Lower Manya Krobo to obtain a PhD in Physical Education, was honoured for breaking barriers and later rising to become a principal.
Her achievements were cited as a major source of inspiration for women and girls in the municipality.
Other honourees included former MP Michael Teye Nyaunu, who represented the constituency from 1997 to 2013, as well as distinguished personalities such as Moses Tettey-Bio Terkper, an educationist, Joseph Akunyumu-Tetteh, an entrepreneur and the late Matey Johnson.
In a moment of appreciation, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi himself was also presented with an award in recognition of his contributions to the development of Lower Manya Krobo.
In addition, the Member of Parliament rewarded ten outstanding branches with motorbikes in recognition of their exceptional performance, having secured the highest number of votes for the party in the 2024 general elections.
The event brought together chiefs, clergy, police personnel, party faithful.
