Engineer George Kofi Arthur, former Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central
Former Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central, Engineer George Kofi Arthur, has hinted of plans to contest the position of Western Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), citing his extensive parliamentary experience, deep party roots and professional background as key strengths he brings to the race.
In announcing his bid, Arthur said his decision is motivated by a desire to strengthen party unity, improve grassroots mobilisation, and position the NDC for sustained electoral success in the Western Region.
Born on February 24, 1969, at Wassa Agona Amenfi in the Western Region, George Kofi Arthur has a long history of public service and party activism.
He served as Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central from 2005 to 2017, completing three consecutive terms in Parliament.
During his time in the legislature, he earned a reputation for discipline, policy depth and effective committee leadership.
His academic background reflects a blend of education, engineering, and governance.
He holds a Diploma in Education with Distinction in Educational Technology from the Presbyterian College of Education, a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technology (Electronics and Automotive option) from the University of Education, Winneba and a Master’s Degree in Governance and Leadership from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).
He says this multidisciplinary training has shaped his technocratic and results-oriented approach to leadership.
Beyond politics, Arthur has built a diverse professional career as a teacher, engineer, electronics specialist, and construction professional.
He has worked with Toyota Ghana, Anyasco Electronics and Afrangua Construction Limited, contributing to major road infrastructure projects across the Western and Western North Regions.
According to him, these experiences have given him first-hand insight into the region’s development challenges, particularly in infrastructure, employment, and industrial growth.
Within the NDC, his party credentials span both grassroots and national levels. He has served as General Secretary of the Mpohor Constituency, a member of the party’s National Communications Team and has held several leadership roles during his student and professional life.
In Parliament, he served on multiple committees, including Roads and Transport; Public Accounts, Defence and Interior; Agriculture; Housing and Employment and Social Welfare.
Notably, he was Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee and Deputy Ranking Member of the Public Accounts Committee for over a decade.
Political observers within the party say his blend of legislative experience, administrative competence and regional development exposure makes him a strong contender for the chairmanship.
Supporters believe his deep understanding of party structures and ability to coordinate across constituencies and stakeholder groups could help enhance internal cohesion and boost the NDC’s electoral fortunes in the Western Region.
As the NDC prepares for internal contests ahead of future national elections, Engineer George Kofi Arthur says his bid is anchored in experience, discipline, and service, pledging to work inclusively with all party stakeholders to build a stronger and more united party in the region.
