The construction of a bridge over the Dubonku Stream at Martin Kordzi, a suburb of Kadjebi dominated discussions at a civic engagement between various community groups and the District Assembly at Kadjebi in the Oti Region.
The forum, organised by the Kadjebi District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), aimed to promote transparency, accountability, and active citizens’ participation in local governance.
Speaker after speaker called on the District Assembly and Yao Gomado, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Akan, to treat the construction of the bridge as a priority.
Isaac Abavon, the Assemblyman for the Dubonku Electoral Area, said several appeals to the Assembly for the construction of the bridge had fallen on deaf ears.
He said the bridge served as a vital link for residents of Martin Kordzi, Tadzewu Kpodzi, Kasadjan and the Cocoa Market area to the main market and other essential public offices and schools in the Kadjebi township.
Abavon noted that the collapse of the footbridge over the stream had left residents stranded and in despair.
He, therefore, appealed for urgent intervention to construct the bridge to safeguard lives and improve access in the area.
Contributing to the discussion, Okyeame Asiedu Kwasi Akyea, Linguist to the Omanhene (Chief) of the Kadjebi Traditional Area described the project as urgent and stressed the need to seek expert advice to ensure that the bridge would withstand the effects of global climate change.
Joseph Mawunedi Sogbo, a resident of Asito, suburb of Kadjebi, expressed concern about the inability of the Kadjebi District Assembly to mobilise resources for the project.
Sogbo questioned whether the Assembly was waiting for a fatal incident to occur before acting and appealed to benevolent organisations and philanthropists to support efforts to fix the bridge.
