Students of the Royal Nursing College at Tafo Nyhiaeso in the Ashanti Region were left in shock on Thursday, February 19, as the Ghana Tertiary Education Council (GTEC) ordered the immediate closure of the institution.

According to GTEC, the college, which reportedly enrolls over 800 students, has failed to provide the necessary documentation confirming its accreditation.

The council stated that the college lacks approval from the Nursing and Midwifery Council and had ignored a directive issued in June 2024 to stop admitting new students.

According to a report on citinewsroom.com, officials from GTEC visited the campus and conducted an hour-long inspection before announcing the closure.

The move is intended to protect students and ensure that educational standards are upheld.

GTEC confirmed that arrangements will be made to transfer affected students to other accredited institutions, and special provisions are expected for final-year students to complete their programmes.

The closure sparked immediate distress among students, with many visibly upset and in tears.

Some expressed frustration at having recently paid fees, worried about the sudden interruption to their education.

Adding to the tension, the report said that the wife of the owner of the school and some management members were taken into custody by officers from the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service, who had accompanied GTEC officials to the school.

The sudden shutdown has raised serious questions about programme administration and academic standards at the college, leaving the local community and students grappling with the consequences.
