The Ga Traditional Council has announced a month-long ban on noise-making across the Ga State as part of preparations for the annual Homowo Festival.

The ban, which will run from Monday, May 4, to Thursday, June 4, was announced at a press conference in Accra by Nii Ayikoi Otoo. He explained that the directive is meant to create a calm and reflective atmosphere as communities prepare spiritually for the festival.

“The traditional council hereby informs the general public that, as part of the customary rites leading to the celebration of the annual festival, there will be a ban on drumming and noise-making within the jurisdiction of the Ga states from Monday, May 4, to Thursday, June 4," he said.

Under the directive, churches and mosques are expected to keep their activities within their premises, without the use of microphones, musical instruments, or loudspeakers outside. Roadside evangelism using megaphones is also prohibited, while funerals and related activities will not be allowed during the period and for a week after the ban is lifted.

The council noted that while the directive applies broadly across the Ga State, areas such as Osu, La, Teshie, Nungua, Tema, Prampram, and Kpone will announce their own specific timelines after May 4.

"Osu, La, Teshie, Nungua, Tema, and Kpone traditional areas will announce separate plans after May 4 for specific periods,” Nii Ayikoi Otoo added.

The council stressed that the ban is not just a rule, but an important cultural practice—one that allows the Ga people to honour their traditions and prepare meaningfully for Homowo, a festival that commemorates resilience, unity, and the triumph over famine.
