A pregnant woman in active labour pain was reportedly left lying on the floor without medical assistance at Ayiwata in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region, raising concerns about access to healthcare in rural areas.

The incident, which occurred on Monday, April 13, 2026, saw the woman enduring severe pain with no trained health professional present to assist her.

Witnesses said she had been waiting for help from a local elder, as no immediate medical support was available.

A passerby, believed to be Metro TV’s Shadrack Odame Agyare, who came across the scene, intervened and offered to transport the woman, who was in pain, to the nearest health facility located several miles away.

In a video shared by Metro TV online, the pregnant woman was held by other villagers as they slowly made their way through an extremely muddy, waterlogged dirt road surrounded by thick vegetation to a car that would transport her to the nearest hospital.

“A distressing scene unfolded earlier today as a woman in active labour was left unattended, lying on the floor with no trained medical professional in sight, relying instead on anticipated help from a ‘village elder’. In a critical moment, a passerby stepped in to assist, volunteering to transport her to the nearest healthcare facility located several miles away,” Metro TV’s caption read.

The woman was reportedly forced to move through intense labour pains to reach transportation before being taken to the hospital for care.
