The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Coastal States Stability Mechanism and the International Organization for Migration, has commenced a four-day capacity-building programme on community policing in Wa.

The training brings together ninety (90) police officers from Wa West, Sissala West (Gwollu), and Lambussie districts. It is aimed at strengthening policing capacity, promoting community engagement, and enhancing conflict prevention and resolution at the local level.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Upper West Regional Police Commander, Francis Yiribaare, described the programme as timely and strategic. He emphasised that modern policing must be people-centred and driven by trust and collaboration with communities.

“Effective policing is not only measured by crime statistics but by the level of confidence the public has in the police,” he stated.

The Deputy Director-General of the National Patrol Department, Prince Jude Cobbina, urged participants to take the training seriously and apply the knowledge gained in their respective districts to improve service delivery.

Amos Nunifant expressed appreciation to the Ghana Police Service for its participation in the strategic training programme. He noted that the initiative forms part of a broader effort to extend similar capacity-building interventions to other regions, with the aim of enhancing security and strengthening public confidence in police–community relations.

Other dignitaries present included Peter Kamasa, Deputy Regional Commander, and Seth Tay, Course Director from KAIPTC.

The programme forms part of broader efforts to strengthen community policing and enhance peace and security across the Upper West Region.
