Food vendor killed in renewed violence at Nkwanta South

A 28-year-old food vendor identified as Richmond Benye has reportedly been killed on Saturday, May 2, 2026, following renewed violence in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region.

According to a report by adomfmonline.com, the deceased was shot by unidentified gunmen while going about his daily activities.

"The deceased, who was well known in the community for his food vending business, was attacked under circumstances that remain unclear. The motive behind the shooting is yet to be established as investigations continue.

"Benye leaves behind a wife and a young child, plunging his family and the local community into mourning", it stated.

The Nkwanta South area has long been affected by recurring conflicts, with periodic outbreaks of violence disrupting livelihoods, discouraging economic activity, and leading to loss of lives.

Despite the presence of security forces and ongoing mediation efforts between rival groups, sporadic attacks have continued.

Meanwhile, security agencies have increased deployments in identified hotspots to prevent further escalation and protect residents.
