Residents of Sefwi Amoaya in the Bodi District of the Western North Region are expressing renewed concerns over the resurgence of illegal mining activities, just months after the community successfully opposed such operations.

A report by adomonline.com on May 6, 2026, indicated that the town had previously taken a firm stand against "illegal mining" following allegations that the former chief and the Assemblyman had struck a deal with miners to operate in the area.

The situation escalated into violence, leading to the "vandalism of the Assemblyman's provision store," the "burning of a Toyota Highlander belonging to the former chief," and "damage to the chief’s palace."

After the unrest, the former chief fell ill and subsequently passed away, while the Assemblyman continues to cope with the losses incurred during the disturbances.

However, a recent visit by Adom News’ Augustine Boah revealed that "illegal miners have returned to the community, reigniting fears among residents."

These activities have severely impacted the River Bia, which residents report has become heavily polluted.

Additionally, a waterlogged area in the center of the town has been transformed into an active mining site, leaving "large uncovered pits" that pose serious risks, particularly to children.

At the chief’s palace, a representative named Ofori informed Adom News that efforts are underway to stop the illegal operations, although mining activities persist.

Residents describe the situation as "dangerous", recalling previous incidents where individuals lost their lives after falling into abandoned galamsey pits.

With mining now occurring in the heart of the community, there is growing concern that more casualties could happen if urgent action is not taken.

Affected residents are therefore calling on authorities to intervene swiftly to clamp down on these illegal activities and restore safety in the area.
