Some pupils participating in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE 2026)
As the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) progressed, a number of candidates were noticeably absent. In the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, many desks remained empty.
This week has seen intense focus in the Western Region, where 45,116 candidates are participating in the 2026 BECE.
While most examination centers maintain a calm and orderly atmosphere, the presence of empty desks in various examination halls has created a sense of concern.
According to a report by 3news.com on May 6, 2026, a total of 6,209 candidates were expected to take part in the ongoing exams in Sekondi-Takoradi.
However, data released by the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Education Directorate indicates that 45 candidates have been reported absent since the exams began, 27 male and 18 female.
Investigations into the reasons for their absence have revealed several factors.
School authorities report that some candidates relocated with their families, while others have traveled outside the jurisdiction after the registration period ended. For some, the reasons for their absence remain unclear.
Tragically, among the female absentees, one candidate could not sit for the exams due to pregnancy.
During a monitoring tour of the examination centers, the Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, visited several schools to wish candidates well and assess the conduct of the exams.
Addressing the students shortly before their papers, the minister emphasised the importance of hard work over shortcuts.
He urged the candidates to avoid examination malpractice and to remain disciplined and law-abiding, even after the exams conclude.
"Your hard work over the last three years is what will carry you through. Stay away from 'apor' (cheating) and focus on what you have learned. We expect the best from you, not just in your grades, but in your character as you transition to the next level of your education," the minister stated.
