Some teeming youth in the Weija-Gbawe constituency in the Greater Accra Region have expressed gratitude to the former Member of Parliament for the area, Tina Naa Ayeley Mensah, for her role in securing and facilitating the construction of a Pediatric Hospital project in the constituency.

The youth said they are “happy that the hospital was not built in any constituency within the country but rather the Weija-Gbawe constituency through the lobbying of Tina Mensah,” according to comments made to this reporter following a social media post by the former MP.

They believe the project will significantly help address healthcare challenges in the constituency and surrounding communities.

However, they also expressed concern that the facility has still not been commissioned and handed over to the Ghana Health Service, despite being completed years ago.

The youth are therefore calling on the relevant authorities to ensure that the hospital is commissioned and put into use without further delay to serve its intended purpose.

Their comments come in response to a reflective social media post by Tina Naa Ayeley Mensah, former MP for Weija-Gbawe and a former Deputy Minister for Health under the Akufo-Addo administration.

In the post, she wrote, “Today, as I reflect on my years of service as Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe and Deputy Minister for Health under the leadership of H.E. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Hon. Minister for Health Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, I feel proud to have contributed to one of the major healthcare projects in my constituency — the Pediatric Hospital project currently situated in Weija-Gbawe.”

She explained that the project was part of a World Bank-supported initiative originally considered for siting at the Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital in Accra.

According to her, “Initially, there was a suggestion for the project to be located within the premises of an already existing children’s hospital, Princess Marie Louise, in Accra Derby Avenue due to its long history and need for renovation.”

However, she indicated that she successfully lobbied for the facility to be sited in her constituency, stating:

“Considering the growing population and healthcare needs of the people of Weija-Gbawe and its surrounding communities, I passionately proposed that the hospital be located within my constituency, where it would serve a much larger catchment area and remain highly accessible to residents across Greater Accra and beyond.”

She added that her proposal was accepted by the Ministry of Health and government leadership.

“I am grateful that my minister and the government saw merit in this vision and approved the proposal. By the grace of God, I personally supervised and monitored the progress of the project throughout my tenure, and today, it stands as a beautiful and significant healthcare edifice for mothers, children, and families.”

Tina Mensah further emphasized that although she is no longer MP for the area, her role in the project should be properly acknowledged.

“Although I am no longer the Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, history must fairly record the role played by the Akufo-Addo government, the Ministry of Health leadership, and my personal contribution in initiating and bringing this important pediatric hospital project to the constituency.”

She concluded that leadership is about service and long-term impact, stating, “Leadership is ultimately about service, sacrifice, and leaving lasting impact for generations yet unborn. I remain proud that this project will continue to serve humanity long after politics.”
