The Central Regional Prisons Command has collaborated with Cape Coast Technical University to provide vocational and technical training for inmates.
According to a report by myjoyonline.com on May 7, 2026, this initiative aims to equip them with employable skills for life after prison.
The partnership was established following a strategic meeting between the leadership of both institutions during a courtesy visit by Deputy Director of Prisons Joseph Asabre to the university's management.
Through this initiative, inmates will receive training in various fields, including fashion design and garment production, welding and fabrication, culinary arts, biodigester engineering, digital and ICT skills and graphic design.
Professor Eric Awere, the Dean of the School of Engineering, welcomed the Prisons Service delegation on behalf of the Vice Chancellor.
He commended the initiative and assured the team of the university's commitment to ensuring a successful partnership.
During the meeting, Dr Gabriel Mwinkume, the Coordinator for Competency-Based Training at the university, presented a concept note outlining the "proposed areas of collaboration".
CSP Vincent Ziniel, Head of Business Development and Special Initiatives for the Ghana Prisons Service, highlighted areas that require further review and refinement.
Professor Awere also mentioned that "the university is seeking funding support for the program and is preparing a memorandum of understanding to formalise the partnership."
Deputy Director of Prisons Joseph Asabre stated that, "this initiative would provide inmates with practical vocational skills, supported by recognised certification, which would improve their chances of obtaining employment and positively contributing to society after their release."
Officials from both institutions emphasised that this partnership is part of broader rehabilitation and reintegration efforts "aimed at reducing recidivism and empowering inmates through education and skills development".
