The Upper West Regional Police Command has successfully concluded a fifteen-day Community Policing Training Programme aimed at strengthening police-community relations and promoting peace and security within the region.

The training, organised by the Ghana Police Service in collaboration with the Coastal States Stability Mechanism (CSSM) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), ended on Friday, May 8, 2026, in Wa.

A total of ninety police personnel drawn from the Sissala West, Wa West and Lambussie Districts benefited from the programme, which was conducted in three cohorts. The initiative focused on enhancing community-centered policing, conflict prevention, human rights compliance, intelligence-led policing, and stakeholder engagement.

The closing ceremony was attended by the Upper West Regional Minister, Charles Lwanga Puozuing Esq.; the Chief Director of the Upper West Regional Coordinating Council, Hajia Pognaa Fati Issaka Koray; the Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare; the Deputy Regional Commander, ACP Peter Kamasa; and Amos Nunifant, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer representing CSSM and IOM.

Speaking on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, DCOP Francis Yiribaare expressed appreciation to CSSM and IOM for supporting the programme, describing community trust as the foundation of effective policing.

He noted that the training had equipped participants with practical skills necessary for conflict prevention, protection of human rights, and effective community engagement.

Amos Nunifant commended the Ghana Police Service for its commitment and active participation throughout the training period.

He explained that the programme forms part of broader efforts to strengthen police-community partnerships, improve public confidence in security institutions, and promote peaceful coexistence across communities in the Upper West Region.

The Regional Minister, Charles Lwanga Puozuing Esq., praised the Ghana Police Service and its partners for implementing what he described as a timely and impactful initiative.

He emphasised that enforcement alone cannot adequately address challenges such as chieftaincy disputes, land conflicts, and youth unrest, stressing that community-centered policing remains essential for sustainable peace and development.

He further encouraged the supporting institutions to continue investing in community policing initiatives and appealed for support in providing officer safety equipment, including ballistic helmets and body armours, to enhance operational effectiveness within the region.
