The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has claimed that flooding challenges in the region have already been addressed through interventions carried out.

Speaking in an interview with Asaase FM on June 8, 2026, she noted that efforts had already been made to tackle flooding in the region, including enforcement actions targeting structures located on waterways and protected areas.

She said the demolition of structures to clear waterways has made her unpopular, adding that many people “hate” her for enforcing the exercise.

“I have tackled flooding within the Greater Accra Region. I tackled this way back before we even started experiencing this flooding in Greater Accra… knowing very well that some of the buildings at Ramsar sites will have an effect when it rains, I went on and I did a lot of demolition. Hence, I have a lot of people that hate me because of this demolition exercise,” she stated.

The Minister further highlighted other areas she says she has worked on, including sanitation, street lighting, chieftaincy disputes and boundary-related issues within the region.

“I have tackled sanitation within the Greater Accra Region. I have tackled chieftaincy disputes within the Greater Accra Region. I have tackled street lighting within the Greater Accra Region. I have tackled boundary issues within the Greater Accra Region,” she added.

Meanwhile, several parts of Accra were submerged following heavy rains on June 3, 2026, disrupting transport and commercial activities and leaving residents and traders in affected areas struggling to recover.

Affected areas included Circle, Kaneshie, Pantang, Ashaley Botey Lakeside, Ashaiman, Sakumono, Kanewu, Adjei Kojo, sections of the Agbogba–Ashongman Road and other parts of Lakeside.

At Kaneshie Market, floodwaters reportedly swept through sections of the trading area, destroying goods and leaving several traders counting their losses as they attempted to salvage what remained.
