The Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson has described the flood situation in Samreboi as “very, very sad” after touring communities where over 200 houses were submerged and 26 buildings collapsed entirely.

The affected areas include Aboi, Cocoase, Popolozzo, Nsuo Akyir, and Roman Hill, which sit very close to Samatex Plywood Company.

Thousands of residents have been displaced, many fleeing “with nothing but the clothes on their backs.” Currently, displaced families are sheltering in classrooms and tents.

Joseph Nelson said residents point to illegal mining as the key trigger. “The illegal miners have blocked the flow of the Tano river and when the rain fell, it overflow,” he stated, adding that excavators have destroyed riverbanks and choked both the Samre and Tano rivers with silt.

Two other human activities worsened the disaster: buildings constructed in waterways blocked natural flow, and indiscriminate waste dumping clogged drains and gutters, leaving the area “drowning in its own waste.”

“It is high time we all came together to find a lasting solution to the human activities causing these floods,” the Minister said.

Government, he announced, is providing temporary relief for victims while planning long-term measures to prevent future occurrences.

He commended Amenfi West MP Eric Afful, MCE Priscilla Yorke, and the CEO of Samatex Plywood Company for their swift response.

He therefore expressed disappointment over how some people have been mining illegally in the area in order to block the free flow of the Tano River.

He also took the opportunity to appeal to benevolent organizations and individuals to come to the support of the affected residents.

Joseph Nelson was accompanied by the Western Central Regional Police Commander, Western Regional NADMO Director, Amenfi West Municipal Security Council, and the MCE.
