The roads have been submerged by the floodwaters
Correspondence from Volta Region
Residents of Sogakope South in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region have been affected by flooding after a heavy downpour inundated homes and submerged several roads in low-lying communities on Sunday morning.
The flooding followed hours of intense rainfall that began around 4:00 a.m., prompting distressed residents to call the Assembly Member for Sogakope South, Gleku Williams Kofi, to report the worsening situation in communities near the Villa Cisneros Resort, Holy Trinity Spa and the Modal University College (Nurses Training).
Speaking after touring the affected areas, Gleku said he later visited the communities with his colleagues after informing the area's Member of Parliament, Maxwell Kwame Lukutor who was out of town.
He said almost every house along the riverbank had been affected after floodwaters backed into residential areas because waterways had been obstructed by buildings. According to him, the affected communities are situated close to the river, making them particularly vulnerable during heavy rains.
Gleku described the flooding as a recurring challenge, saying Sogakope South experiences more flooding than other parts of the township whenever it rains because runoff from surrounding areas flows into the community.
He attributed the persistent problem partly to the obstruction of natural waterways. He explained that previous efforts to create drainage channels had been unsuccessful because some landowners refused to allow portions of their plots to be used, insisting that their developments were within their legally acquired boundaries.
The Assembly Member said the floodwaters reached above knee level in many areas and rose to waist level in some locations, including around Williago Park. Although the water receded after some time, he noted that conditions remained difficult for residents in the worst-hit communities.
Gleku said no casualties had been reported as of the time of the assessment. However, many homes remained flooded, with residents appealing for immediate assistance.
He added that, due to the levels of the floods, he advised children under the age of 18 to stay out of school.
He disclosed that the Member of Parliament, had contacted the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to respond to the situation. While NADMO officials had recently collected data following an earlier flooding incident, they had not yet arrived at the scene during the ongoing emergency.
Meanwhile, South Tongu District Chief Executive, Victoria Dzeklo, was reported to have deployed drones to assess the extent of the flooding. She later confirmed that she was overseeing the situation and would respond to further enquiries after completing the assessment.
