The outreach programme was held on July 2, 2026, at the Nsuta Main Market and Lorry Park
The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and with support from Global Affairs Canada, has organised a community outreach programme in the Sekyere Central District of the Ashanti Region to educate residents on adolescent sexual and reproductive health and the prevention of gender-based violence (GBV).
The outreach programme was held on July 2, 2026, at the Nsuta Main Market and Lorry Park and brought together community members, health professionals, law enforcement officers and education stakeholders for public education and discussions.
The event focused on addressing misconceptions surrounding adolescent sexual and reproductive health, including myths related to family planning, while promoting gender equality and raising awareness about the causes and consequences of gender-based violence.
According to the organisers, the programme sought to create safe spaces for discussions on adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRHR), gender equality and GBV. It also aimed to provide opportunities for interaction between community members and healthcare providers, while challenging harmful social norms and practices that negatively affect adolescents and contribute to gender-based violence.
Resource persons from the Ghana Health Service (GHS), the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service, and the Ghana Education Service (GES) facilitated the discussions.
Joyce Owusu Aboagye of the Ghana Health Service educated participants on adolescent sexual and reproductive health, while Chief Inspector Bright Dorman of DOVVSU discussed issues relating to gender-based violence and the legal protections available to victims.
Director Kwame Addo of the Ghana Education Service also highlighted the role of education in promoting healthy adolescent development and gender equality.
Participants expressed appreciation for the initiative and appealed to the organisers to hold similar outreach programmes regularly to sustain public education on the issues discussed.
Addressing participants, the Sekyere Central District Director of the NCCE, Mr. Gordon Yeboah Opoku, urged community members to avoid behaviours and practices that hinder the healthy development of adolescents.
He also encouraged residents to support efforts aimed at protecting young people, promoting gender equality and creating safer communities through education and civic responsibility.
