Scores displaced after fire destroys 10-storey building at Berekum

Scores of residents, including some students of the Berekum College of Education (BECOLED), have reportedly been displaced after fire gutted a 10-storey building they were occupying at Berekum in the Bono Region.

According to a report by adomonline.com, on July 28, 2026, the fire destroyed personal belongings such as laptops, books, academic certificates, clothing, and other valuables.

Some victims of the fire, who are also students, described the incident as a major setback, noting that it comes just two months before they are due to complete their studies.

The landlord of the 10-storey building, Nana Osei Amankwaa, recounted that he was asleep when neighbours raised the alarm.

According to him, he rushed outside only to find the house engulfed in flames.

He, however, alleged that repeated calls to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) station in Berekum went unanswered.

Later, a tender was dispatched from Sunyani, but by the time firefighters arrived, a greater part of the building had already been destroyed.

One of the affected students, Prince Ofosu Agyemang, lamented that the students have lost virtually everything they needed to complete their academic programme and were uncertain about how they will continue their education.

The victims have therefore appealed to government, corporate organisations, philanthropists, and the general public for relief items and financial assistance.

Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire.
