NPP Race: Western Regional secretary cleared to run unopposed

The road is now clear for the incumbent Western Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Okatakyie Amankwaa Afrifa, alias OKT, to retain his position unopposed after his only challenger, Kwasi Bonzoh, was disqualified during the vetting process.

Former Ellembelle District Chief Executive (DCE) and four-time Ellembelle NPP Parliamentary Candidate, Kwasi Bonzoh, had filed his nomination forms to contest the position.

However, he was disqualified for failing to present a first degree, which is among this year’s requirements for the Regional Secretary position.

Kwasi Bonzoh appealed the decision, but the Regional Appeals Committee dismissed his appeal and upheld the vetting committee’s decision.

Possible further appeal

Sources within Kwasi Bonzoh’s camp indicate that he may petition the National Steering Committee and the National Executive Committee (NEC) to overturn the decision and allow him to contest the position.

Until that process is determined, OKT remains the sole candidate in the race.

Notice of polls issued, constituency elections completed

The NPP has officially issued the Notice of Polls for the Western Regional elections.

The election is scheduled to take place in the Ahanta West Constituency on August 15, 2026.

Party officials say all constituency elections in the Western Region have been completed, with attention now shifting to the regional polls as part of preparations towards the election of national officers.

What this means for 2028

With the NPP having already selected Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as its presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections, attention in the Western Region is now turning to building a strong regional executive to support the party’s campaign.

Party executives say a united front at the regional level will be critical to helping the NPP recapture lost seats and improve its electoral fortunes in the Western Region.

Party executives say the development reflects confidence in the current secretary’s leadership and his efforts to mobilise the grassroots ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Some constituency executives have also commended the unity demonstrated in the region and urged members to focus on party reorganisation and efforts to win back key seats in the Western Region.
