Gender Minister consoles families, survivors of Bukom tragedy

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has visited families affected by the recent tragic accident at Bukom, assuring them of government support as investigations into the incident continue.

According to a Facebook post shared by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and sighted by GhanaWeb on July 29, 2026, the minister, accompanied by Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, toured the accident scene, visited the bereaved family and called on some of the injured survivors.

Addressing the affected families, Dr Lartey conveyed President John Dramani Mahama's condolences, saying the government stands with the victims during the difficult period.

"We are here to express our deepest condolences and sympathy to the bereaved family and all those who were injured. It is heartbreaking that a young lady in the prime of her life has been lost. We pray for the speedy recovery of those receiving medical care and wish them strength as they heal," she said.

The minister disclosed that President Mahama directed the visit after receiving reports of the tragedy, adding that the government would assess the needs of the injured to determine the appropriate support to be provided.

She explained that while some victims have been discharged from hospital, others remain on admission. Regarding the deceased's family, she noted that the government would await the outcome of ongoing court proceedings before taking further action.

Dr Lartey also stressed the need to improve road safety to prevent similar incidents, revealing that the Greater Accra Regional Minister, together with the Mayor and the area's Member of Parliament, would engage relevant stakeholders on measures to enhance safety in the community.

She further commended the youth and residents of Bukom for their swift response in rescuing victims and assisting after the accident.

"We are grateful to the young people and the entire community for their compassion and solidarity during this difficult moment. Your prompt response undoubtedly helped many of the victims," she added.

The delegation also included the Member of Parliament for the area, Alfred Nii Ashie Kotey, and Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive Michael Kpakpo Allotey.
