KMA demolishes unauthorised structures around Baba Yara Stadium

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), with support from the military, has demolished unauthorised temporary structures around the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

The exercise, carried out on Friday by the Assembly’s Operation Team, targeted makeshift shops, containers and kiosks that did not conform to KMA’s specifications.

According to the Assembly, some of the structures obstructed access routes and posed safety risks to traders and patrons in the area.

The demolition forms part of KMA’s broader efforts to restore order, improve public safety and enforce compliance with its directives within the Central Business District and surrounding areas.

The Assembly said the exercise is also intended to improve the appearance of the area ahead of major sporting events.

KMA said occupants had been given several notices and engaged over the need to vacate the area voluntarily before the exercise.

However, many of the occupants failed to comply, prompting the Assembly to proceed with the demolition.

Speaking during the exercise, Kumasi Mayor Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi said the move was necessary to sanitise the city and protect public infrastructure.

He said KMA would continue to enforce its by-laws and would not allow unauthorised developments to undermine the metropolis’s development plans.

The mayor urged residents and traders to seek the necessary approvals before putting up structures.

The Assembly said similar exercises would be conducted in other parts of the metropolis.
