The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ellembelle in the Western Region, Joseph Agyekum, has presented assorted items and cash support worth GH¢460,097 to 69 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the district.

The support was provided under a PWD support and donation programme held at the Nkroful branch of The Church of Pentecost on Friday, August 21, 2026.

The items distributed included deep freezers, fufu-pounding machines, cassava-grinding machines, embroidery machines, industrial sewing machines, industrial shoemaking machines, laptops, bales of school bags, phone accessories and assistive devices such as crutches.

Some beneficiaries also received financial assistance for livelihood-generating activities, business support, education and apprenticeship.

Speaking at the presentation, Joseph Agyekum urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the items and resources to improve their livelihoods and strengthen their families.

“When we empower one person, we strengthen a family. When we strengthen families, we strengthen communities. And when communities become stronger and more inclusive, the entire nation benefits,” he said.

He further emphasised that Persons with Disabilities deserved opportunities to live with dignity, acquire education, work and contribute meaningfully to society.

“Persons with Disabilities deserve an opportunity to live with dignity, to learn, to work, and to contribute meaningfully to society,” he stated.

Joseph Agyekum pledged to continue supporting PWDs in the district and advised beneficiaries against begging on the streets, urging them instead to use the support to become productive and self-reliant.

He commended the Member of Parliament for Ellembelle, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, for his support to the Assembly.

The DCE also noted that the District Assembly Common Fund allocation for PWDs had been increased from three per cent under the previous government to five per cent, commending President John Dramani Mahama for the decision.

In his closing remarks, Joseph Agyekum called for collective efforts to promote an inclusive society.

“Together, we can build a society where every person, regardless of disability, has the chance to learn, work, dream and succeed. Together, we can create a more inclusive, compassionate, and empowered society where no one is left behind,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, the Ellembelle District Coordinating Director called on the Department of Social Welfare to update its register of PWDs in the district to ensure comprehensive coverage of support.

“It is important that we have an updated and credible register of Persons with Disabilities. This will enable us to track those who have benefited and those yet to benefit, so that in the end, no person with disability is left out of the Assembly’s support programmes,” he said.

Several beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the Assembly and the DCE for the support and pledged to use the items and cash to improve their businesses and livelihoods.

The DCE said the beneficiaries comprised 32 males and 37 females.
