The 2026 NkrumahFest has been climaxed with a grand celebration at Nkroful in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region.
The week-long celebration, held in honour of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, featured a series of activities from Friday to Sunday.
Commissioning of Osagyefo Roundabout and statue
On Friday, the Member of Parliament for Ellembelle and Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, commissioned a modern Osagyefo Roundabout featuring a statue of Dr Kwame Nkrumah at Krisan Junction on the Eikwe-Sanzule road.
Armah-Kofi Buah said the site was chosen because it was one of the locations occupied by the military when Dr Nkrumah was overthrown.
He said Dr Nkrumah gave Ghana the Akosombo Dam, but his hometown did not benefit from electricity until President Jerry John Rawlings brought power to Nkroful to honour him.
He stressed that Dr Nkrumah “never dies” because his ideas live on.
The event was attended by Samia Yaba Nkrumah, daughter of Dr Nkrumah; Prof P.L.O. Lumumba; NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia; Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene; and other dignitaries.
Grand durbar
On Saturday, the grand durbar was held at the Nkroful Agricultural Senior High School park.
Two distinguished personalities, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, and Nana Kobina Nketsia V, Paramount Chief of the Essikado Traditional Area and President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs, were honoured for their contributions towards projecting Nkrumah’s legacy and their service to the Western Region and Ghana.
Prof Lumumba, who delivered the keynote address, warned that Africa’s dependence on foreign powers for medicines, food and technology betrays Nkrumah’s unfinished vision.
Madam Samia Nkrumah also thanked the people of Nzema for honouring her father.
Thanksgiving, donation and concert
On Sunday morning, a thanksgiving service was held at Nkroful to mark the successful celebration.
In the afternoon, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah donated assorted food items and cash to elderly persons in the Ellembelle District as part of his social responsibility.
The festival was climaxed in the evening with a mega musical concert at Nkroful.
The concert, which attracted more than 20,000 people, featured top Ghanaian artistes, including Shatta Wale, Kofi Kinaata, Nero X, Ackah Blay, Jak Alolome, Mimi Kwaw and Express Gifty, who thrilled fans with back-to-back performances.
The 2026 NkrumahFest was organised to commemorate the 117th birthday of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, who was born on September 21, 1909, at Nkroful.
The NkrumahFest was instituted about six years ago by the Member of Parliament for Ellembelle, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, to preserve and promote the legacy and Pan-African ideals of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
The festival seeks to celebrate Dr Nkrumah’s contribution to Ghana’s independence and Africa’s liberation struggle, promote his vision of African unity, self-reliance and industrialisation, educate the youth on his ideology, promote tourism in Nkroful as the birthplace of the founder of modern Ghana, and foster community development in Nzemaland.
This year’s celebration was held under the theme: “NkrumahFest @117: Celebrating His Enduring Legacy – Africa Must Unite or Perish.”
