How OTEC FM report led to life-changing support for teen mother and her twins

In 2021, the heartbreaking story of 17-year-old Beatrice Agyei, a student of Offinso Namon SHS, was brought to light by OTEC FM journalist Kwame Agyenim Boateng.

Beatrice, who had lost her mother, gave birth to twins while in SHS One. With no one to care for them, she was forced to carry her babies to school every day, nursing them between classes while struggling to keep up with her studies.

Her story touched many hearts after it was aired on OTEC FM.

The then Headmistress of Offinso Namon SHS, together with the school’s Administrative Officer, Appiah Emmanuel, and Kwame Agyenim, subsequently set up a support fund for Beatrice.

Through contributions from benevolent individuals, about GH¢60,000 was raised in the account. The money was used to cater for Beatrice and her twins and provide them with better living conditions.

But her story did not end there.

Support from Heavenly Gift of Joy Foundation

Following OTEC FM’s report, the Heavenly Gift of Joy Foundation, a non-governmental organisation established and solely funded by Veronica Theresa Casely-Hayford Benson, took up Beatrice’s case.

In a significant intervention, Casely-Hayford Benson personally funded the construction and furnishing of a one-bedroom apartment for Beatrice and her twins.

Her support went beyond providing shelter. She continued to take responsibility for their upkeep, including food, healthcare and education, until Beatrice completed Senior High School.

After her graduation, the Foundation enrolled Beatrice in a fashion school, where she trained in fashion design and event management.

Five years after the Foundation began supporting her, Beatrice has completed her training and now has a stable life with her children.

For a young girl who once sat in a classroom with her twins strapped to her back and faced an uncertain future, the transformation has been significant.

Beatrice can now work, earn a living and provide for her twins, bringing relief to a family that once faced an uncertain future.

Her journey highlights the impact of community support and journalism in drawing attention to vulnerable people, as well as the role of individuals such as Veronica Theresa Casely-Hayford Benson in providing long-term support.
