Some passengers in parts of the Ashanti Region have accused transport operators of charging more than the approved increase in transport fares.

According to the passengers, some drivers are charging beyond the agreed eight percent increment announced after a series of meetings between transport operators and the Ministry of Transport.

The new fares took effect on Saturday, September 26, 2026, but have since triggered complaints and disagreements between drivers and passengers.

Checks by the OTEC News Desk revealed that some drivers are charging more than the approved rate.

For instance, commuters travelling from Nkawie to Abuakwa said the fare had increased from GH¢4.50 to GH¢6, representing an increase significantly higher than the approved eight percent.

Some drivers operating along the Suame road have also reportedly increased their fares beyond the approved rate, prompting passengers to call on the authorities to intervene.

“From Nkawie to Abuakwa, they used to take GH¢4.50, but now they are charging GH¢6. This is more than the eight percent they announced,” one passenger said.

Another passenger accused the drivers of exploiting commuters.

“The drivers are cheating us. Government said eight percent, but they are charging their own prices,” the passenger said.
