The residents are demanding a transparent investigation and justice for Acheampong.
Residents of Akyem Hemang in the Fanteakwa South District of the Eastern Region have taken to the streets to demand justice for 28-year-old Douglas Acheampong, who they allege was shot and killed by military personnel during a clash at a local mining concession.
The residents are calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Acheampong’s death and want anyone found culpable to be held accountable.
The protest follows an incident on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, when heavily armed men reportedly arrived at the mining concession in V8 Land Cruisers and clashed with some community members.
Speaking to the media after the residents presented a petition to the Fanteakwa South District Chief Executive (DCE), Mercy Korang, the Assemblyman for the area, Darko Richmond, alleged that Acheampong was shot from behind while fleeing the scene.
According to him, the incident occurred after security personnel allegedly fired warning shots into the crowd during the confrontation.
Richmond said the residents were demanding an immediate and impartial investigation to establish the circumstances that led to Acheampong’s death.
He said the community also wanted authorities to identify and prosecute anyone found to have played a role in the alleged shooting.
The residents subsequently submitted a formal petition to the Fanteakwa South District Assembly, seeking answers and appropriate action over the incident.
Receiving the petition, the DCE, Mercy Korang, assured the residents that their concerns would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities for consideration and the necessary action.
She also appealed to the residents to remain calm and allow the relevant authorities to address the matter through the appropriate channels.
The residents, however, maintained that they wanted a transparent investigation and justice for Acheampong.
