Okaikwei North MP Theresa Lardi Awuni
Okaikwei North Member of Parliament, Theresa Lardi Awuni has urged the Asunafo South District Assembly to use part of its Internally Generated Funds (IGF) to hire night drivers to support emergency fire response in the district.
She argued that employing drivers to ensure fire response vehicles can operate at night would help strengthen the Assembly’s ability to respond to emergencies.
The legislator, who is also a member of Parliament’s Local Government and Rural Development Committee, made the appeal when the Asunafo South District Assembly appeared before the committee to present its 2025 Annual Statement by the Audit Committee.
Her proposal formed part of discussions at a public hearing involving Regional Coordinating Councils (RCCs) and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) from the Eastern and Ahafo regions.
Awuni urged the Assembly to consider the financial implications of the proposal and explore the use of its IGF to pay the drivers, rather than allow a lack of night-driving support to undermine emergency fire response.
The call places the spotlight on the need for district assemblies to make practical arrangements to ensure emergency services can respond effectively at all times, particularly during the night.
