Somè Senior High School (SOSSEC) has marked its 60th anniversary with a call on government, alumni, parents and other stakeholders to support efforts to sustain the school's achievements and improve its future.

The Diamond Jubilee celebration, held on October 31, 2026, was organised under the theme, “Sixty Years of Educational Excellence, Overcoming Challenges and the Role of Stakeholders.”

Speaking on behalf of the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister's Technical Advisor, Professor George Oduro, congratulated the school on reaching the milestone and commended its contribution to education in the Ketu South Municipality and Ghana.

Established in 1966 as a community-based day school, Somè SHS has produced several personalities who have contributed to national development in various fields. They include award-winning journalist Kofi Akpabli, Associate Professor Albert Agbesi Wornyo and education technology and policy expert Dr Sam Korku Awuku.

The school also celebrated the academic achievements of its students, including Daniella, who placed first in the 2022 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in the Ketu South Municipality.

Professor Oduro said the government remained committed to strengthening secondary and foundational education, noting that GH¢4.2 billion had been allocated in 2026 to support the Free Senior High School and Free Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes.

He also disclosed that the Ministry of Education had received a petition from the Somè Traditional Council seeking the school's elevation from Category C to Category B. He said the request would receive consideration under the World Bank-supported $300 million STARR-J Project.

On discipline, Professor Oduro stressed that academic excellence must be supported by strong moral values, integrity and responsible conduct. He said teachers found culpable of sexual misconduct would be held accountable and urged school authorities to report conduct that threatens students' safety and dignity.

He encouraged students to embrace discipline, hard work and integrity, use their digital learning tablets responsibly and remain focused on their academic goals.

Professor Oduro also urged alumni, traditional authorities, parents and the wider community to continue supporting the school, saying its progress depended on the collective efforts of all stakeholders.

The school's motto, “Tso Nakle”, meaning “Arise and Shine”, was highlighted during the celebration as a reminder that educational excellence should be reflected in both academic performance and character.

The anniversary celebration ended with a renewed call for stakeholders to work together to position Somè SHS for greater achievements.
