Member of Parliament for Kwadaso, Professor Kingsley Nyarko
The Member of Parliament for Kwadaso, Professor Kingsley Nyarko, has called on the MP for Akwatia, Lawyer Bernard Bediako-Baidoo, to render an unqualified public apology to teachers over remarks allegedly considered disrespectful to the teaching profession.
His comments follow a heated television discussion between the Akwatia MP and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Communications Director, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, during which comments about teachers reportedly sparked public criticism.
Professor Nyarko made the call during an engagement with selected senior media practitioners in Kumasi, held on the sidelines of a free breast cancer screening exercise he sponsored for constituents of Kwadaso.
He said teachers deserved the same dignity and respect accorded to other professionals, including lawyers and medical practitioners, given their contribution to national development.
“Teachers play a critical role in shaping the human resource base of this country and must not be treated as inferior professionals,” Prof. Nyarko said.
He urged the Akwatia MP to demonstrate leadership by offering a public apology to bring the controversy to an end.
“An unqualified apology would show maturity and respect for the millions of teachers who continue to serve the nation under difficult conditions,” he added.
Professor Nyarko also accused Bediako-Baidoo of making misleading statements in his defence of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and President John Dramani Mahama.
He cautioned that the Akwatia MP's continued involvement in what he described as unproductive political discourse could have consequences for his political future.
Meanwhile, Professor Nyarko commended Miracles Aboagye, describing him as an articulate, vibrant and fact-driven communicator.
The Kwadaso MP also used the occasion to highlight the importance of preventive healthcare, particularly among women, as he sponsored a free breast cancer screening exercise for his constituents.
The programme, organised in collaboration with the Dependable Ladies as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, was aimed at promoting early detection and raising awareness of the disease.
Addressing residents who participated in the exercise, Prof. Nyarko urged women to prioritise their health and undertake regular medical check-ups.
“Health is wealth, and I want to encourage all women to prioritise regular check-ups, especially when it comes to breast care, because early detection is the surest way to save lives,” he said.
The initiative attracted a large turnout and forms part of the MP's broader efforts to promote preventive healthcare and encourage constituents to take responsibility for their health.
“Our goal is to ensure that no one in Kwadaso suffers needlessly from conditions that could have been managed through early medical intervention,” he added.
The organisers, Dependable Ladies, expressed gratitude to the MP for his continued support for community-based health initiatives. They also commended the medical team for its professional assistance and residents for participating in the exercise.
According to the group, the strong turnout reflects growing awareness among residents of the importance of preventive healthcare.
The group stressed that breast cancer awareness should extend beyond occasional campaigns, urging residents to remain vigilant and commit to regular screenings.
It reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote healthier lifestyles and improve the well-being of people in the constituency.
