Tanyigbe Senior High School cries for essential infrastructure

Mon, 4 Apr 2011 Source: GNA

Ho, April 04, GNA - Togbe Kwasi Adiko V, Paramount Chief

of Tanyigbe Traditional Area, has appealed to the government to

provide dormitories, staff bungalows and fence wall for the

Tanyigbe Senior High. He students were taking advantage of the lack of these

facilities to loiter in town at will. "I am not happy seeing female and male students in town

both day and night while they should be in school learning," he

said in an interview with the GNA. Togbe Adiko said the situation had deteriorated to the extent

that increasing numbers of female students were getting pregnant. Ms Agnes Afesi, Headmistress of the School, told the GNA

that some boys in town were taking advantage of the situation to

"camp and sexually abuse female students." She said because the School lacked bungalows for staff,

only one house master was on the campus watching over 500

students. "Girls in the School hostel and day students move about and

before one realizes, they vanish through a nearby bush into town

sometimes rendering the classrooms half empty," Ms Afesi said. She said the School also has challenges such as inadequate

classrooms, ICT laboratory, library, toilets and urinals among

others and appealed to past students and the Ghana Education

Trust Fund and the Member of Parliament for the Area to help

address the infrastructure challenges. Last year Tanyigbe Ladies Club) raised some funds to build

a Girls' Hostel for the School following reports that some girls

from neighbouring communities were being hosted by some men

in town. 04 April 11
