Accra, Oct. 7, GNA – Members of Shalom Indigenous Foundation, a Charitable Christian Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) on Thursday presented items worth GHC2,500 to Borstal Institute in Accra.
The items were 32 boxes of snack cookies, three bales of used clothes, quantities of textbooks and medicines.
In addition, they donated GHC50 towards the upkeep of the inmates. .
Reverend Noah T. Quarshie, Founder of the Foundation, presenting the items, said it was to meet the needs of the inmates and support activities at the institute.
He appealed to government to institute measures to prevent charitable organisations from paying import duties on items they import for their activities.
Deputy Superintendent of Prisons, Constance Dokumah, Counsellor of the Institute, thanked the Foundation for the gesture and the concern shown to the inmates.
He said the items would assist the management in their activities.
DSP Dokumah said the Institute had 118 juveniles between 13-18 years being trained in various vocations such as tailoring, fitting, welding, blacksmithing, ceramics, electricians, draughtsmanship and shoe making to prepare them for the job market.
In addition, the inmates undertake formal education and participate in the BECE and NVTI Examination and those who were successful further their education to Senior High School and University.
DSP Dokumah expressed concern about the shortage of stationery and textbooks, teaching aids and training materials and called on government, NGOs, organisations and individuals to assist the Institute.
