Alhaji Yakubu Duogu, the Wa Municipal Chief Executive has said the massive expansion in education infrastructure and other pro-poor education interventions should serve as a reminder for teachers to rise up to the challenge of falling standards of education.

“There will be no excuse if the teaching and learning environment continues to improve as a result of the massive investment made by the government without a corresponding reflection in the academic performance of students”, he stressed.

The MCE made the statement during the commissioning of a 6-Unit classroom block constructed at a total cost of GH¢155,585.00 at Gbegriu a community under Wa Municipal.

The project which is among the 2009-2010 GETFUND Projects made up of 10 similar structures constructed in various rural communities including Kpongu, Guli, Nakori, Tampieni, Boli, Bamahu and Mangu have been completed and handed over.

Alhaji Duogu noted that education was the cornerstone of the Government’s “Better Ghana Agenda”, hence, the massive investment witnessed in the education sector within the past three years.

He said the Assembly had also taken delivery of 3,000 pieces of dual desks and 800 pieces of mono desks all valued at GH¢385,200.00 adding that approval would soon be given for the Municipal Director of Education to distribute them to the very deprived schools in the Municipality.

The MCE who also did the symbolic distribution of some free school uniforms to pupils of Gbegriu Primary School called on the Municipal Director of Education, Mr Sulemana Alhassan and his staff to step up their monitoring and supervisory role to check teacher absenteeism and also ensure that they spend more productive time with their students in schools.

Mr Alhassan appealed to members of the community to support the teachers in taking good care of the facility for it to benefit the students.

He appealed to the teachers to live exemplary lives for the pupils entrusted in their hands to emulate and become good citizens in future.
