A former Headmistress of Holy Child Senior School has appealed to parents and guardians, as the first educators of children, to recognize that they are the most important partners in education and should therefore inculcate virtues like discipline and respect for all in their children at home.
Mrs. Alice Marie Agyeman urged parents and guardians to assist their children and wards to develop their talents.
Mrs. Agyeman was addressing the 66th Open and Prize Giving Day of the Holy Child SHS in Cape Coast under the theme “Reflecting the essence of education through effective partnership”.
She said the country’s socio-economic growth and its subsequent sustenance would largely depend on the provision of quality education to develop its human resource base.
She paid tribute to successive governments including the country’s colonial administrators for showing great interest and passion and investing in education and called for more investments to ensure that “all children of school going age are in the classroom”.
Mrs. Agyemang appealed to the government to recognize the important role teachers’ play and reward them accordingly.
She urged students to make hay whilst the sun shines as their parents, teachers, the church and government sought to nurture, direct and promote their progress. “Mother Ghana needs transformational leaders, be it in the homes, schools, churches, organizations or political institutions.”
The Most Reverend Mathias Kobena Nketsiah, Metropolitan Archbishop of Cape Coast, appealed to the Government and Ghana Education Service to allow religious institutions to play active roles in the management of religious educational institutions.
He said given the chance, the religious bodies will take up the supervisory role, to monitor the performance of both teachers and students.
In her annual report, Rev. Sister Josephine Anto, the Headmistress of the school, said the school recorded 100% passes in the 2011 WASSCE.
Ms. Alberta Henrietta Savage, a final year student, was the overall best student and also picked prizes for both elective and core mathematics.
