An international NGO, World University Service of Canada (WUSC), is to support entrepreneurial training of 300 young people in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai area to help fight poverty and joblessness.

Mr Akwasi Addae-Boahene, the Country Director, said the beneficiaries would be assisted to generate their own employment.

This is part of an initiative launched to inject pace into the socio-economic progress of the district.

Known as “BAB District Development Project”, it is jointly funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and Rio Tinto Mining Alcan (RTA) and seeks to increase the contribution of mining companies to the sustainable development of the area.

He said it focuses on the strengthening of governance and service delivery through the training of assembly members and the setting up of community action plan committees, provision of boreholes and washrooms.

Mr Addae-Boahene, speaking at a public forum said the project’s other priority was to help to improve the quality of education and school services.

They would therefore be running in-service training programmes for teachers, school management committees and school clubs.

The forum provided the platform for the assembly, traditional rulers, private sector operators, civil society organizations and other stakeholders to discuss issues pertaining to the area’s development.

Mr Joe Adansi-Bondah, Bibiani District Chief Executive, said the project had already brought significant improvement to education and sanitation as well as community self-assessment to identify priority development needs.

He appealed to all to join hands to harness the resources there, for accelerated economic development.**
