Reverend Professor Paul Fynn, Chancellor, Wisconsin University College, on Thursday advised students not to allow mobile phones become a stumbling block to their education by wasting time on calls and other phone applications at the expense of their books.
In addition, parents should invest more in their children’s education and desist from wasting fortunes on material things.
“Children need money for fees, clothes, food, shelter and yet people waste money to organise expensive funerals at the expense of education.”
Prof. Fynn gave the advice at the Third Basic School Mentoring programme organised by Insight Foundation Ghana (IFG), a Child Development Oriented Non Governmental Organisation on the theme; “Ensuring Successful and Malpractice Free Examination”, for BECE candidates from Osudoku in Accra.
He called on financial institutions to invest some of their profits in education for the well being of society.
Mrs Thomasia Brown, Executive Secretary of IFG, said the programme was designed in 2008 to create equal opportunities for students preparing for BECE in deprived communities, to be inspired and confident as their counterparts in well endowed areas.
“Although mentoring programmes in the life of the student are critical for positive development, it has been given low priority by decision makers and relevant stakeholders, particularly in deprived communities.”
She pledged the Foundation’s commitment towards working to reduce vulnerability among women and children in deprived communities as well as facilitate the provision of health and education support to empower them live decent lives.
Mrs Agnes Teye Cudjoe, Public Relations Officer, West African Examinations Council (WAEC), educated the students on the rudiments of the examination slated for April.**
