Archbishop urges the media to be guided by the national interest

The Most Reverend Justice Gabriel Yaw Anokye, Metropolitan Catholic Archbishop of Kumasi, has urged journalists to be mindful of the national interest in the performance of their duties.

He said they should do everything to ensure that their work brings peace and progress to the people but not conflict and division.

He was interacting with members of the Catholic Association of Media Practitioners –Ghana (CAMP-G) in Kumasi on Thursday.

Archbishop Anokye underlined the need for them to uphold the truth and high journalistic standards by avoiding stories based on gossip, hearsay and half-truths saying they should be factual and balanced in their reportage.

Members of the CAMP-G had called on him at his office to introduce the Association to him.

He encouraged them to support the church in its spread of the gospel to bring “salvation” to the people.

The Very Rev. Father Luis Kofi Tuffour, Vicar General of the Kumasi Archdiocese, reminded the media “to give voice to the voiceless, weak and the vulnerable in the society” by highlighting their daily struggles and challenges.

Mr Johnson Gyampoh, Editor of the Pioneer and President of the Association, pledged to work hard to bring honour to both the journalism profession and the Catholic faith.
