Goverment Must Be Responsive To The Right Of The Teacher Trainees In Ghana.
The Executives of the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG) is by this press release to the notice of the government and other stakeholders the concerns of our students in the 38 colleges of education numbering about 27,000 students nationwide.
The teacher trainee who gain admission is expectant of receiving allowance, and do not know the challenges of the ministry of education, the I.P.P.D office of the Ghana Education Service and Controller and Accountant General that must have delay them from receiving their allowance.
The recent up rise of demonstrations in some colleges in the Northern Region, Ashanti Region, Central Region and Greater Accra Region is of great concern to us as an association. The police have been alleged to have shot live bullets into demonstrating students, to disperse them. This approach by the police has wounded a lot of the students on demonstration. We believe in the public order acts but if the police who are to protect life begin to endanger the life of people they ought to protect have become an unfortunate strategy of policing in our country Ghana.
We therefore require of some pragmatism and very responsive approach to dealing of the concerns of students is the colleges of education.
We (TTAG) are on this statement calling on;
1. His Excellency, the President John Mahama to kindly direct without any delay in the payment of over two years allowances due our colleague.
2. The Government of Ghana to increase the quota of admission in the various colleges of education in the entire nation.
3. The police to exercise patient in dealing with student who go on demonstration.
4. Our dear principals of college of education, we plead they admit within the government’s quota of enrolment for teacher education in Ghana to avoid any risk in students receiving their allowance.
Finally, we urge all our members to remain calm and exercise patient in assurance that government and other stakeholders involve would pay all allowance arrears due us and heed to our clarion call.
We seize the opportunity to wish our nation a peaceful election come December 7th 2012.
