Kibasibi Foundation, an NGO, has donated medical supplies and equipment worth 14 million dollars to the University for Development Studies (UDS) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SHMS), to boost outreach programmes.
The items included cartons of drugs for the treatment of hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol as well as calcium supplement for women, and equipment such as nuclear scintillation camera and X-Ray Fluoroscopy machine.
Some of the items, particular the nuclear scintillation camera, which helps in easy diagnosis of diseases, is being kept in Accra and will later be brought to the UDS after a structure is built to install it.
Dr Issifu Haruna, Professor of Chemistry at the Atlanta University in the United States, and Founder of the Kibasibi Foundation, presented the items to the authorities of the UDS at its Tamale Campus on Tuesday.
He said the donation was in memory of his late father, Kpembiwura (Chief of Kpembe Traditional Area in the East Gonja District) Kibasibi Alhaji Ibrahim Haruna I, who served as Northern Regional Minister under President Hilla Limman’s Administration, and died in November 2011.
Dr Haruna said the Kibasibi Foundation also planned to set up a fellowship and scholarship initiative between the UDS and the Atlanta University to facilitate exchange programmes.
He said the Foundation is also providing annual scholarship for 10 students of Salaga Senior High School.
Receiving the items, Dr Edward Gyader, Dean of the UDS/ SMHS expressed gratitude to the Foundation, and especially Dr Haruna for the gesture and called on others to emulate it.
Dr Gyader called for expedited action on the proposed exchange programme between the UDS and the Atlanta University for the benefit of the students.
