WANEP–Ghana trains youth on peacekeeping

About 50 community volunteers, Community Based Organizations, Youth and Women groups in northern Ghana have undergone a two-day conflict prevention workshop in the Tamale.

The workshop under the auspices of WANEP-Ghana sought to build the capacities of participants in basic community conflict handling mechanisms and early warning.

With the participants drawn from Tamale, Bawku and Wa, the programme fell under the Human Security Project of the United Nations which is being implemented in Tamale, Wa, Yendi and Bawku.

WANEP-Ghana’s National Coordinator, Justin Bayor explained the rationale saying, “These places are noted for their volatile nature and therefore this particular project is aimed at improving the human situation in these communities.”

“The objective is to ensure that the communities are adequately prepared, both at civil society level and at the security agency level to deal with the conflicts that might emerge in their communities,” he added.

Mr. Bayor expected that the participants will impart the knowledge on their community members to ensure behavioral change for peace to prevail.

In November 2012, 40 members of the security committees of the aforementioned communities were equipped with civil peace methods.

In December 2012, another batch of 50 community members from Tamale and Yendi were schooled on basic community conflict handling mechanisms.
